History
The architecture of the Capitanata's towns
(an ancient word of Byzantine deriving,
meaning the province of Fogia)is the result
of different influences which have been
marking it during the time:the Daunis,
the Romans, the Byzantines, the Normans
and Frederick the 2nd, the French
and the Spanish; this land has been able
to integrate these different traces of
civilization keeping its many wonderful
prooves:archeological sites, castles and
beautiful old city centres.
Between these archeological sites we remember:
Ordona, San Giusto near Lucera, Grotta
Paglicci in Cagnano Varano;as for the
museums, they are mostly archeological.
To 18 Km from Cerignola, throughout the
road to Candela, there is Torre Alemanna,
a settlement whose name comes from a quadrangular
tower built by the Knights of the religious
and militar order of Santa Maria dei
Teutonici in Gerusalemme, in the first half
of the 13th century.
Recently the considerable archeological
heritage, datable from 13th to 16th century
and cherished in the time in Torre Alemanna,
has been recovered and finally brought to
light and made public. (www.torrealemanna.it)
Among the beautiful old city centres, we
remember:Lucera, Troia, Manfredonia, Bovino,
Pietra Montecorvino, Sant'Agata di Puglia,
Faeto, Orsara di Puglia, Deliceto, Ascoli
Satriano.
Covering the paths to these towns, it's
possible to meet:the immense flat of wheat
on the Plain(well-known as the Italian Granary),
the mountains of Subapennine Daunus, full
of woods and small picturesque villages.
